Meet Norm Hughes AKA “Norman the Great” or “Mac” who has a great passion for literature. The well-respected ex Wallabies legend was an Architect/ Property Developer before retiring 20 years ago. “I’ve been swimming here 20 years, a great way to start the day.” Best known for hosting a large group of influential Brisbanites with ‘avocado on toast’ and cappuccinos at the Valley Pool. “After I’ve been to the Valley Pool, I don’t need to go anywhere else”

Meet John Sexton

Meet John Sexton, a retiree who once worked in the Carpet industry and owned well known Café Montmartre in Surfers Paradise. “I have fond memories of the Valley Pool in the 60’s, swimming in my school days. I have great friends here like Norm” Known for ordering a Piccolo Latte post swim. John fills his time playing golf and babysitting his 5 grandchildren. Best Golf course in the world? “Kauri Cliffs, Bay of Islands, NZ. A simply Magnificent golf course.”

Meet Monika Kemp

Monika Kemp, 59 years, who is always on trend with her bright bikinis. Best known for serenading the lifeguards with her voice as she swims her laps. “I’ve been singing for 10 years in Brisbane Choirs” She’s been swimming at the Valley Pool for 12 years, 5 days a week. “I drink hot ginger tea between my morning laps. Chinese medicine says it opens up the stomach meridian for calming and energy” You have to agree she looks great for her age.

Meet Ian Ogilvie

Ian is one the first cabs off the rank in the mornings, cracking funny jokes and hitting the water at 5.30am without fail. A devout swimmer at the Valley Pool for 35 years he says, “You’ll find me in the slow lane, the guy that looks like flippers on a fridge”. And why so loyal to the Valley Pool? “The water temperature is always good and the staff are always friendly” Ian spends his down time fishing. So I asked him for his best tip? “Don’t try to catch anything in the Valley Pool"

Meet David Tran

Meet retired Chinese Chef from Brisbanes Northside, David Tran, 65 years Best known for feeding hungry Lifeguards at the Valley Pool with his signature Cantonese and Hong Kong cuisine. "I've been swimming at the Valley since 1994, that's 20 years. I enjoy the open air and wide lanes for lap swimming. Always familiar faces and I have made lots of friends like Norm. There are a group of 20 of us who catch up regularly." Best Chinese Restaurant in the Valley? "Iconic Enjoy Inn on Wickham"

Meet Simon Smale

Simon Smale, 28 year old Red Dog Triathlete who admittedly loves his swimming toys (paddles, flippers and goggles). The fly-in/ fly-out Oil & Gas Geologist is originally from Southend UK, having lived in Africa, Europe and Algeria calls sunny Brisbane home. “This winter is ridiculous. It’s so rare to find an outside facility like this in the UK. I swam my way through school and college. I recently watched the National Water Polo League Finals here at the Valley Pool. Such a great event.”
